Phagocytic Activity of the Reticuloendothelial System Following Anesthesia of Thiopental Sodium or Halothane in the Rats

Abstract
The phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system of the rats anesthetized with thiopental or halothane was assessed by means of collargol-1311 tracing method. The results were as follows.
1. Thiopental sodium caused mild decrease of the phagocytic activity three hours after. the anesthesia and moderate decrease after two days. It caused no more change after seven days.
The degree of suppression of the phagocytic activity by thiopental anesthesia was small in the liver and large in the spleen two days after the anesthesia.
2. Halothane caused mild decrease of the phagocytic activity three hours and severe decrease two days after the anesthesia. After seven days, however, it caused slight increase.
The phagocytic activity of the liver increased slightly three hours after halothane anesthesia, moderately after two days and still slightly after seven days. That of the spleen, however, decreased considerably after three hours, markedly after two days, though it recovered to the control value seven days after the anesthesia.
